A.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.5;\">yet each December we skate<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.5;\">across the year\u2019s days frozen<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.5;\">like a winter pond<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.5;\">in woods we used to know<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.5;\">reached by trails trod so often<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.5;\">we did not consider the way<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.5;\">could ever be lost<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There is no ice in L. A.<br \/>\nyet each December the days behind<br \/>\nso liquid in their living<br \/>\nstiffen into glacial sheets<br \/>\nthat slide ahead to build new ground<br \/>\nwhere grass may grow and we may walk<br \/>\nno step without the steps before<br \/>\nno deed without its prologue<\/p>\n<p>There is no ice in L. A.<br \/>\nbut under every changing hour<br \/>\nice lurks, strong, ancient, familiar<br \/>\nfaces lie within like captured leaves<br \/>\nwords of anger, words of love, talk<br \/>\nno chisel can chip away now<br \/>\nwords, faces that hummed with heat once<br \/>\nnext year and the next<br \/>\nwill hold them fast, prettify<br \/>\nrough edges with rime crystals<br \/>\nmake their stillness almost beautiful<br \/>\nno thaw will loose their grip<br \/>\ncold fingers round our hearts<br \/>\nbut stubborn pump of blood will warm<br \/>\ntheir touch so we may bear it better<br \/>\nso they may rest in easy water<br \/>\nfreed to shift and settle, inhabit<br \/>\nlong silence beneath our flashing blades<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/noellesickels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ice-texture-4288x2848_52831.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-158 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/noellesickels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ice-texture-4288x2848_52831.jpg\" alt=\"ice-texture-4288x2848_52831\" width=\"283\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a>in the melt of our remembrance<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is no ice in L.
