\nsays my East coast friend, gawking at Hollywood Farmer\u2019s Market,
\nclosest thing to church attendance its Sunday patrons know.
\nI try to view the scene with her eyes, spot the usual uniforms
\nblack hair streaked with pink, hot blue, piercings in tender parts
\nfaded forties\u2019 slips on twenty-something bones
\ndreadlocks, straw hats, shaved heads, turbans
\nthe stray character actor from sit-com guest shots
\nreal farmers, hucksters, old hippies, eager bakers, musicians
\nfree kittens next to hot tamales beside handmade soaps, flowers
\nBaby Gap kids sample fruits,\u00a0strollers loaded with vegetables
\namiable swirl and jostle, Angelenos stocking up, taking stock
\nL. A. version of town square, Main Street, village well.
\nThis is ordinary to me, nothing to remark
\nexcept, perhaps, that once I was an Eastern girl, too.<\/p>\n
