{"id":403,"date":"2018-01-15T23:25:07","date_gmt":"2018-01-15T23:25:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/noellesickels.com\/wp\/?p=403"},"modified":"2018-01-15T23:25:07","modified_gmt":"2018-01-15T23:25:07","slug":"poem-of-the-month-oases-in-the-south-bronx-by-adam-wiedewitsch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/noellesickels.com\/wp\/?p=403","title":{"rendered":"Poem of the Month: Oases in the South Bronx by Adam Wiedewitsch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/noellesickels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/images.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-405\" src=\"http:\/\/noellesickels.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/images.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"273\" height=\"185\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">1<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Calls to mind the truce on the Serengeti<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">the day the rainy season pulls\u00a0back and the star<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">reignites the glut of skin plastered-to-the-rib thirst<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">the scorch of lions\u00a0and buffalo, elephant, giraffe<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">at the water hole, and, somehow, not a lick<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">of blood;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 the day-spa\u00a0of starlings<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">and sparrows in a fire hydrant puddle<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">guttered in a no-parking zone.\u00a0Enraptured <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">they motor their wings\u00a0so fast they rattle\u00a0feral<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">cats on a street better known for the pit-<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">bulled fences, broken-bottle fences, and fresh meat.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">2<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In order to translate the surface of the pool<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">as the shape of the wind in the opening scene<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">of <i>Halloween<\/i>, dry as the omen of cars<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">parked in piles of dead leaves, or the lecture hall<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">on the hill as a Giant\u2019s throne, a cold war era<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">dinosaur lit up like a billboard; the pool appears <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">to imply: you must first fall for the mural<br \/>\nthat appeared one day out of nowhere on the east<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">wall of the masjid; the woman in cut-offs<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">cross-legged on a rug with turntable, Tito Puente<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">on deck; for the greenhouse, the chicken coop<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">and the fanyamas, Rhode Island reds, and silkies<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">3<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">who could forget the silkies, let them break <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 your heart. More and more, leaves wrinkle<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">the surface: what the hell happened here<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 and more questions, like, do city-birds drone<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">like desert-birds?
