Hiding among beheaded Irish yews,
\n<\/span>towers of guarded green,
\n<\/span>nine children escape their day nursery.
\n<\/span>Not for them to wander purposefully in
\n<\/span>the scullery, dairy larder, luggage or lumber rooms,
\n<\/span>to wonder at a salting trough or tongue press,
\n<\/span>licking the sugar cutter to taste what they cannot feel
\n<\/span>in their white cotton nightclothes as they dream
\n<\/span>their mother\u2019s capacious lap, a warm fleshy chair
\n<\/span>large enough to hold all their whisperings
\n<\/span>mama, please come mama.<\/em>
\n<\/span>Instead they sit on high, hard chairs waiting
\n<\/span>until they\u2019re allowed to gather wild mignonette,
\n<\/span>Lady\u2019s bedstraw, cowslip and common violet,
\n<\/span>greedy handfuls they\u2019ll never give away,
\n<\/span>hoarding secret flowers to spread across little beds,
\n<\/span>dreaming again but only of each other,
\n<\/span>ashes, ashes, they all fall down.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n
