a must read
A Child of Air is a captivating and refreshing memoir that covers both time and place. It is personal, universal, and touching. A must read.

the rhythm of childhood
This book reminded me of the rhythm of childhood, how it bumps and twirls through the seasons, how every year the jump rope beating the hot summer sidewalk reminds me of a Stevie Wonder song, which takes me to the skating rink, and all too quickly to the losses. At every turn in A Child of Air there’s a tribute, and it gave me pause to think of so many of my own.

reaches deeply into memories
I was very moved by many parts of this memoir. The writing reaches deeply into memories of everyday childhood and teen events. Sometimes I had to put the book down to ponder what I had just been shown.

a tapestry
This story of a neighborhood of WWII vets, polio survivors, and mysteriously aloof relatives is a tapestry of vivid memories, meticulous research, and photorealistic scenes. Noëlle Sickels makes the time and place palpable, seen through the eyes of a girl who became the writer who could take us there.
