No matter what beliefs one holds about an afterlife, Helen’s story and America’s are realistically done and sure to fascinate. THE MEDIUM is a highly unusual tale set during important moments in our history; it’s also a heartwarming love story.

This book grabs hold and sticks like a magnet.
There were moments that tore into my heart. Exceptionally well-crafted, this highly recommended read shouldn’t be missed.

inner world of psychic mediums portrayed accurately
The inner world of psychic mediums is a nuanced and fascinating place, rarely portrayed accurately by fiction writers. In THE MEDIUM, Noëlle Sickels wonderfully accomplishes that difficult task and much more.
Christine Wicker, author of Lily Dale: The True Story of the Town That Talks to the Dead
captures the era
The story’s conceit (what if psychics weren’t just charlatans preying on the gullible?) is intriguing, and Sickels captures the era in all its innocence and paranoia.
Roger Ito, Los Angeles Magazine

I bought several more copies to give as gifts
Being a member of a Spiritualist church and having experience with mediums, I thought the author did an excellent job at presenting this story. I was so impressed, I bought several more copies to give as gifts.

beautiful language and a sense of suspense
I kept coming across such beautiful language that I found myself pausing to hover over this or that clause or sentence. Pausing in spite of the fact that Sickels masterfully kept ratcheting up the sense of suspense. I appreciated being invited into the head and heart of a girl becoming a woman.

I could not put it down
It’s 8:15 pm Easter Sunday. I had my whole day planned out: house chores, studio work that needs to be done. Around 11 am, I sat on the back terrace and opened THE MEDIUM. I just shut it now. I could not put it down, enjoyed every word, loved the characters, the visuals were so clear, the conversations so believable, the historical scene was so interesting.

Gets not only the details right, but also the intricacies of the human heart.

I became really attached to the characters
I started and finished this book in two days because I couldn’t put it down. The author’s poetic prose softens this fast-paced story and all its joys and heartbreaks. I became really attached to the characters, endearing in their complexities and imperfections.

I was literally moved to tears
The representation of the attitudes and beliefs of people during World War II rings true. I was literally moved to tears by the descriptions of three battles: Pearl Harbor, Omaha Beach, and Leyte Gulf. Sickels’s understanding of what veterans feel is also perfect. Her writing shows a compassionate understanding which so many lack.

An intriguing story of a realm beyond what most of us see and hear
Great book, great story of an amazing time in this country’s history and how once we were all asked to sacrifice for the greater cause. An intriguing story of a realm beyond what most of us see and hear. Well written and researched by an excellent author.

impressed by how pre-war 1930’s and wartime 1940’s events were woven in
Having grown up in a similar Northern New Jersey “bedroom community” as the author, my personal experiences were pleasantly re-awakened by THE MEDIUM. Other than the intriguing theme of spiritual awareness, I was most impressed by how major pre-war 1930’s and wartime 1940’s events were woven into the novel.

Lovely story, great book
What a lovely story! This is well worth the money. I will likely re-read it at some future time. Great book.

I was thrilled with the richness and verisimiltude of the cultural setting
I enjoyed this book from cover to cover. As a German-American who grew up in New Jersey, as did the main character, Helen Schneider, I was thrilled with the richness and verisimiltude of the cultural setting. Her experience of becoming a medium rang true as well. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in psychic phenomena or mediumship, or who simply wants an engaging historical novel to read.
